Some years back, I went to the High Commission of a major European country in Lagos, Nigeria to book a visa interview appointment as a first timer; my wife was there with me!  Ordinary, such event shouldn’t be a big deal but it usually was in our setting due to the hassles involved.

In the past, applicants went to the High Commission to book their visa interview appointments in person and that meant going there to join the usually long and rowdy queues formed daily.  In order to lessen their burden therefore, many of them arrived at the place sometimes as early as 2.00 am each day.  Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to guarantee their being attended to at the end of the day.  And most of the subsequent visa interviews that took place weeks or months after appointments were given, ended up in disappointment.

In any case, we got to the High Commission around 10.00 am because of my earlier commitments and as expected, we met hundreds, if not thousands of disorderly people, on various queues; sweating, yelling, cursing, pushing and fighting.  And the Nigerian security men on duty that day made the situation even worse as they were more interested in brutalizing the people rather than maintaining law and order.  All above and more seriously discouraged me and I opted to return to my base after all, I knew I could remain in Nigeria, excel and help people get well as a medical doctor.  That was my thinking but God’s was different (Isaiah 55:8).  He wanted me out of the country!

So, as we were going back to our car, 2 Chronicles 20:15 flashed through my mind.  It says: ”…Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s”.  Instantly, I knew God was ready to fight my visa ‘battle’ for me irrespective of the prevailing intimidating atmosphere and this stirred us to turn back and I approached the meanest looking security officer in sight.  I told him what my mission was all about and I asked him to act on it.  Immediately, there was great silence all around as everyone waited for him to deal with me mercilessly.  Anyway, he only looked at me menacingly and then shouted ‘’who are you by the way?’’ And I introduced myself to him very calmly, mindful of the enormous power at our disposal (1 John 4:4).

Soon, his contorted face began to relax into a lovely smile, and he commanded his men to open the massive gates of the High Commission for us to come in through them. After that, he held my hand very gingerly, and led us into a vast waiting room, where he introduced us to his colleagues, as his “special friends and in-laws from his home town’’ and he pleaded with them to assist us as quickly, and as much as possible. Remember that this was a man I had never met before, and who would have been very glad to brutalize me a short time earlier.

And in next to no time, a young, amiable official of the High Commission attended to us.  To begin with, he perused my papers and said they were excellent therefore; I needed no further visa interview.  That was an unimaginable occurrence in our setting because even if your papers were okay, you still had to go through the mandatory visa interview.  Next, he asked me to pay the required visa fees to the cashier and I did.  Guess what? I was issued a valid visa in less than 3 hours from the time we arrived at the place; a feat that took most people several weeks, months, years or even a life time to accomplish.  Not even the rich, powerful and highly connected people close to the corridors of power in Nigeria could boast of such a feat.  In a nutshell, God the famous warrior, fought and won my (His) Visa battle for me spectacularly, and all the people that heard my story were amazed, and they joined us to glorify His holy name (Psalm 126:1).

Friend, I have gone this far to let you know that you needn’t fear your battles or fight them by yourself anymore.  Please, hand them over to God in prayer today as they are His anyway, and He will make mincemeat of them.  He did so for me and countless number of people globally; He’ll do same for you too in Jesus name.  Amen.   Remember that our God is mighty in battle (Psalm 24:8)!

I read an article on Stress and Stress management recently and I noted with concern, its devastating effects on its victims. No doubt, it is a killer and we must deal with it firmly hence, my decision to focus on managing it the Spiritual way; that is the cheapest and easiest way in this write up.

Stress has been defined by many people in different ways but I find the definition that sees it as an ”emotional pressure with physical symptoms that has spiritual remedy” most appealing.

It commonly presents with headache, poor sleep, mood swing, decreased appetite, decreased libido and loss of strength amongst other symptoms. It also contributes a great deal to the increasing incidence of suicide, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, etc. seen globally these days.

Furthermore, it is not restricted to our generation alone since it affected those before us as well. For instance, it affected Apostle Paul and he reported it thus ”We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life ” (2 Corinthians 1:8 (NIV)). Thank God he survived it. Friend, if you are battling Stress or any Stress related condition right now, don’t worry; you’ll survive it also in Jesus name. Amen.

Now, let us look at some exceptionally potent but grossly underutilized Spiritual remedies meant for managing it. They are:

1. Rest. In Psalm 127:2, the Psalmist preached against unrestrained work load, which is a major cause of Stress and favours the concept of rest by saying ”It is in vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, …; for so He gives His beloved sleep”. Jesus Christ also favours rest. For instance, when He noticed that His disciples were exhausted, He told them to ”Come aside by yourself to a deserted place and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). From these passages, it is evident that rest is a recognised Spiritual remedy for managing Stress therefore, use it!

2. Bible reading. In John 14:1, Jesus said ”Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me”. Like many of its kind, the passage induces calmness which is an essential requirement for Stress relief. As from this moment, please try and identify all Stress generating areas of your life, extract and meditate on biblical passages relating to them and claim their promises time after time and before long, you’ll come out triumphant in Jesus name. Amen.

3. Prayer. Apostle Paul championed the idea of prayer throughout his earthly ministry and at a time, he said ”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” (Philippians 4:6). He even advised us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Please pay attention to his advice; pray fervently concerning your situation(s) and you’ll be fine in the end in Jesus name. Amen.

4. Being Joyous. Loss of strength is a major symptom of Stress and being joyous restores lost strength back to the body. Prophet Nehemiah alluded to this point by saying ”…the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Please be joyous in the Lord at all times and you’ll be amazed at the extent of strength you’ll garner to overcome Stress and its ilk. This is no fib!

5. Contact your Doctor if you have to. Some folks will disagree with me here because they believe going to doctors connotes lack of faith in God. I hope they’ll have a change of mind after reading Ecclesiaticus 38:4, 12 (Complete Bible with Apocrypha). It says: 4. The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them”. 12. Then give place to the physicians (Medical Doctors), for the Lord hath created him; let him not go from thee, for thou hast need of him”. It is clear from above, that medicine and medical doctors are of God and we are at liberty to use them to solve problems of ill health (including Stress) if we have to.

In summary, the Spiritual remedies for managing Stress highlighted above are invaluable and consistent with the words of God and we should employ them without qualms.

Jesus is Lord!

The disciples of Jesus Christ encountered many difficulties before and after His crucifixion. They were treated very unkindly everywhere they went and they were sore afraid and unsure of what the future had in stock for them. Essentially, they were like sheep without a shepherd. However, reprieve came their way on the third day with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He gladdened their hearts, allayed their fears, encouraged them and gave them the great commission with the assurance of His perpetual presence with them. He said ‘’…lo, I am with you always, even to the end of age’’ (Matthew 28:20). That was the impetus they needed to face challenges, subdue them and become positive role models till now.

To some extent, the situation of the world as it is today can be likened to some of those encountered by the disciples. As a result of our present excruciating Economic, Social and Political climates, a lot of people are battling untold hardship while fear cum uncertainty has become a regular feature of our lives. Governments are panicking, grown-ups are moaning, children are crying, hope is receding and time is going. Without doubt, we need help and Jesus Christ is the only one who can provide it on a platter of gold (Psalm 121:1) and today, He is saying ‘’…lo, I am with you always, even to the end of age’’. So, cheer up!

As we know, Jesus being with people is replete with several benefits some of which I’ll like us to consider for encouragement in this write up. They are:

1. Direction. In his confused state, Apostle Paul, mindful of the presence of Jesus Christ, asked for direction and He gave it to him (Acts 9:1-18). And that marked the beginning of his success story which is the envy of all Christians up to now. It sounds reasonable therefore, that if you desire success in any area of your life and become the envy of all then, you must be prepared to ask Jesus Christ for direction and He’ll give it to you. Prophet Isaiah strengthened this stance when he said: ‘’Your ears shall hear a word behind you saying ‘’this is the way, walk in it’’ (Isaiah 30:21).

2. Peace. Peace is an essential universal commodity and Jesus Christ possesses the ability to give it to you freely if you ask Him. Please note that you don’t need any special prowess before taking this step; all you need is the audacity to do so. Remember that Jesus is the prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6) hence; He is best suited to dish it out and His brand of peace is available for all at all times. He confirmed this in John 14:27 by saying ‘’Peace I leave with you, My peace I give you…’’. So, go for it right now!

3. Security. Jesus Christ is the only person who can guarantee the world a foolproof security and the Psalmist proved this view to be true in Psalm 127:1. He said: ‘’…Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain’’. So, if you want foolproof security in various areas of your life as from now on then, ask Jesus Christ and He’ll organize it for you (John 10:27-28).

4. Salvation. Zacchaeus was a notorious tax collector and a first class sinner but salvation came his way the day Jesus went to his abode. And immediately, his odious past became unimportant and he went on to become a very decent person and an excellent candidate for heaven (Luke 19:1-10). You too can obtain salvation from Jesus Christ today if you ask Him and you’ll be able to enter the Kingdom of God unencumbered at the right time (John 3:3).

How then can Jesus Christ be with you such that you’ll be able to enjoy the abovementioned benefits and more? Well, first, you must seek Him diligently and you’ll find Him (2 Chronicles 15:2). Invite Him to take charge of your life as your personal Lord and Saviour; that is, you must be born again (if you aren’t yet). When you are through with this step then, He’ll dignify you with His presence and shower you with His mind blowing blessings (John 15:4-5). Friend, this is a step that is worth taking and by the grace of God, you will not lose out and your joy will be full in Jesus name. Amen.

Jesus is Lord!

Prophet Daniel, while encouraging the faithful said: ‘’…the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits’’ (Daniel 11:32).

This is a very popular bible passage and one of my favorites because it proves that knowing God is profitable.  And we can appreciate it a lot better by breaking it into three parts and examining each independently.  The parts I am suggesting here are Being Strong, Carrying out Great Exploits and Knowing God in that order.

1.  Being Strong.  On becoming born again, I developed immense strength which propelled me to start taking part in several Christian activities.  I started witnessing to people in drama, speaking engagements, talk shows, televangelism, creative writings and designs, mentoring, etc. These were things I would have been too busy, too unconcerned, too hesitant, and too impatient to embrace under normal circumstances. But, I took them on with dedication almost round the clock yet; I had ample strength left to attend to my patients the way I should.  I later discovered that I was not alone in this state; other Christians are likewise affected and I became interested in knowing why.  Soon, I found relief in Nehemiah 8:10 which says ‘’…the joy of the Lord is your strength’’ and straightaway, I knew that it is the joy of the Lord within us that makes us so strong.  This intensity of joy and strength awaits you today if you covet them.

2.  Carrying out Great Exploits.  Great exploits by the way, are stunning feats and there are many of them all around us but I found those captured in Mark 16:17-18 most eye catching i.e. casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, overcoming deadly substances/situations and healing the sick.  Imagine how useful you can become to this generation if you are able to carry out such great exploits.  It is the aforementioned strength that enables us (Christians) to carry them out through Jesus Christ and Apostle Paul confirmed this position in Philippians 4:13 when he said‘’I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’’.  You too can do all things, including carrying out great exploits, through Christ if you wish.

3.  Knowing God.  Knowing God leads the way to being strong and being able to carry out great exploits (Daniel 11:32) and it is only possible through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).  However, one needs to be born again first.  How then can one be born again you may wish to ask? Very simple!  To begin with, you must confess your sins and then ask Jesus Christ to forgive you and He will (1 John 1:9).  Next, invite Him to take over your life as your personal Lord and Savior and again, He will (John 6:37).  When this is over and done with then by faith, you are truly born again and well positioned to know God intimately (John 3:3).

Friend, this is another grand opportunity for you to be born again if you are not up till now-please don’t misuse it!  And if you are already born again, I rejoice with you heartily.  Without doubt, you do possess enormous strength!  Therefore as from this moment, go out and carry out great exploits not only for yourself, but for humanity and for God as wel,l and you can be rest assured that your efforts will be adequately rewarded at some point (2 Chronicles 15:7) in Jesus name.  Amen.

Members of my set in the Secondary School have been contacting one another very actively lately. This we do through emails, text messages, telephone calls, home visits etc., and I am very excited that we are a lot closer these days, than ever before.

In a recent email authored by one of us, a brilliant Psychiatrist based in UK, an advice for us to pray for one another was given, and I agree with him 100%, because it is the right thing to do, and because I am a beneficiary of such activity on many occasions in the past. I am happy to share one of them with you today.

Shortly after I arrived UK in 2003, I discovered that settling down wouldn’t be as easy as I thought initially. This was due in part to the harsh wintry weather condition, unfamiliar foods I had to eat, the way things are done, etc., all of which were alien to me. I was also very lonely, and I toyed with the idea of going back to Nigeria, but I plodded on all the same. Then, one Saturday morning, while reading in our local library, I was prompted in the spirit to pray for a certain man seating not too far from me. He is of the Arab/Islamic extraction, and I have never met him prior to that time. Anyway, I prayed for divine intervention in his life, family, health, finances, examinations, immigration status, etc.

To my surprise, he came over to me after a bit, shook hands with me, and introduced himself as a Medical Doctor reading for the same examination that I was preparing for. He later told me that he had been watching me, and praying for me for some time, and that he had been led to help me settle down quickly. I am very happy to say that he helped me well beyond my dream. God also answered our prayers such that we recorded many spectacular successes together.

I later sought spiritual explanations for all that transpired between my friend and I, and the following bible passages came to my rescue.

1. James 5:16: ‘’…pray for one another that you may be healed…’’. I concluded from this passage that healing is one of the benefits of reciprocal prayer, and I was dead right for God healed me from a health scare during that period. He also helped my friend to overcome his.

2. Job 42:10: ‘’And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends…’’. This passage shows that restoration is one of the benefits of praying for other people. And God proved this to be true by restoring our confidence back to us, and we went on to pass our examinations in good time. God also restored back to us our residence permit, which was being threatened by forces higher than us at that time. In addition, He guided us to how we were able to settle our immigration status very quickly and permanently.

3. Galatians 6:7: ‘’…whatever a man sows, that he will also reap’’. My friend sowed prayers into my life, and I sowed same back into his. Also, we sowed prayers into several people’s lives, and several people globally prayed for us in return. No wonder we recorded lots of mind-blowing blessings between us.

From all above, it is evident that reciprocal prayers and successes are interwoven. Friend, are you interested in receiving extra blessings from God? If you are then, inculcate the art of praying for other people into your lifestyle henceforth, and I am confident that God will reward you beyond your comprehension (Proverbs 11:25), in Jesus name. Amen.

The Name of Jesus; A Strong Tower

In Proverbs 18:10, the bible says: ”The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe’”

Above passage, is often quoted by Christians to flaunt the Power in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!  We shall examine it more closely in this write-up, but before then, let us first pay particular attention to the word ‘tower’, which is central to it.

Towers are stately edifices, found in several locations in the world and they usually exhibit glowing attributes such as greatness, strength, dignity, reliability and magnetism (they magnetize people to themselves, as striking tourist attractions).

In the olden days, Towers were built for security purposes! When sentries climbed them, they could easily pick out enemy locations far afield, thus making it easy for steps to be taken to annihilate the enemies before they come close enough to cause havoc.  These days, they are frequently used to support electric power transmitters, radio and television antennae, rockets and missiles prior to launching, etc.

Famous world Towers include Galata Tower (Istanbul, Turkey), Big Ben (London, UK), CN Tower (Toronto, Canada), Eiffel Tower (Paris, France), Leaning Tower of Pisa (Pisa, Italy), and Tokyo Television Tower (Tokyo, Japan).

Any person or anything, which exhibits some of, or all the qualities of a typical tower (viz. greatness, strength, dignity, reliability and magnetism, etc.), can be called a ‘Tower’; figuratively speaking.  And there are many people, institutions and governments worldwide that fit this picture.  However, the name of Jesus outclass all of them, because of its huge benefits to mankind each time it is invoked (Mark 16:17-18, Philippians 2:9-11) or better still, each time people run to it.  No wonder it is fittingly called ‘a strong tower’!

Whenever people invoke or run to the name of Jesus, many things happen.  Some of them are:

1.  Healing.

In Mark 16:17-18, Jesus said:  ”And these signs will follow those who believe: In My namethey will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover”.

In Acts 3:1-10, a certain man lame from her mother’s womb, had the unique opportunity of meeting Peter and John face to face, when they came to the temple to pray.  Actually, he wanted alms from them, but he got much more than he bargained for that day. At some point, Peter looked at him intently, and said: “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk’’.  And instantly, his feet and ankle bones received strength and so, he leaping up, stood up, walked and entered the temple with them-walking, leaping and praising God.  And those who knew him, recognized him as the ex-beggar, and they were stunned at what the name of Jesus did for him.

Friend, if you need healing in any part of your life, like your body, family set up, business, career, ministry, education etc. then, call on the name of Jesus Christ today, and you’ll have it at some point.  Amen.

2.  Deliverance from Demons (Evil Spirits).

Jesus confirmed this stance in Mark 16:17, this way:  ”And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons…”.

In Acts 16:16-18, a certain slave girl, possessed with the spirit of divination, and who brought her masters much profits through fortune telling, met Paul and Silas as they were going for prayer.  And she followed them endlessly, yelling ”These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation”, until they got greatly annoyed with her.  Then Paul turned, and addressed the spirit in her like this: ”I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her” and he came out that hour.

The name of Jesus is still available for use to cast out demons to date.  Therefore, if you have any inkling that you are in bondage of any kind, and you want to be free from it once and for all, then stir Jesus Christ into action right away.  Call on His name, and He will deliver you.  Please remember that ”… if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

3.  Remission of sin.

While preaching to Cornelius’ household, Apostle Peter confirmed that the remission of sin is possible through the name of Jesus.  This he did, by saying:  ‘’To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins’’ (Acts 10:43).

In Acts 2:14-42, precisely on the day of Pentecost, Peter gave a moving sermon, which stunned his listeners a great deal, and in their stunned state, they addressed the Apostles as follows: ”Men and brethren, what shall we do” (v37)? Then Peter responded, ”Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (v38).  Afterwards, many people received his words gladly, and they were baptized.  And that day alone, three thousand souls were added to the Church (v41).

Friend, we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), and unless we repent, there is no way we can attain the Kingdom of God (Ephesians 5:5). However, if we call on the name of Jesus Christ today, and confess our sins, He will forgive us, and we will have remission of our sins (Acts 10:43, 1 John 1:9) and in the end, we will attain heaven in Jesus name.  Amen.

4.  Salvation.

Apostle Peter made allusion to the inclusion of Salvation as one of the benefits of invoking or running to the name of Jesus, as follows:  ”…for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved(Acts 2:12).

You will recall that a slave girl once tormented Paul and Silas without a break until Paul, in anger, cast out the Demon manipulating her (Acts 16:16-18).  There and then, her owners framed them up, and they were imprisoned unduly.  But God intervened, and set them free in a bit (Acts 16:25-26).  And the keeper of the prison, supposing the prisoner’s had escaped, drew his sword and wanted to kill himself, but for the quick interjection of Paul that they were still around (Acts 16:28).  And so in awe, the man said: ”Sirs, what must I do to be saved (Acts 16:30)? And they replied ”Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household”.  And without more ado, he and his household were saved that day!

You too can be saved today, in the name of Jesus.  But being righteous is of utmost essence here (Proverb 18:10).  And being righteous, starts from being born again!  Are you born again? If you are; very good! In that case, you can go ahead and invoke the name of Jesus Christ as you wish, and you won’t have to struggle to be healed, delivered from Demons, have remission of your sin, etc. anymore.  However, if you are not born again yet, please invite Jesus Christ into your life right now.  Ask Him to take charge as your personal Lord and Saviour, and He will not snub you; this is a promise (John 6:37)!

Do Something Nice Today!

Recently, I read an article about some Christian Inventors and how their works positively affected the entire world in a daily devotional (The Word For Today).  And soon after, I discussed it with a friend of mine; an avid follower of Christ and we both ended up giving thanks to God for their lives.  Today, I will present a synopsis of what was written on some of them and then take on two vital questions.

1. James Young Simpson:  As a student at the University of Edinburgh, James Young Simpson got attracted to Surgery because of the pain and high mortality rate experienced during surgical operations.  One day, he read Genesis 2:21 (And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam…) and concluded that Chloroform was the way out.  At first, he experimented on himself and in 1847; the first set of operations using Chloroform were performed.  His celebrated work is the harbinger of today’s safe surgical practices that saves inestimable number of lives each year.

2.  Louis Braille.  Louis Braille invented the Braille which is a system of raised dots on paper.  This extraordinary creation makes it possible for the visually impaired persons to read the bible and other materials.

3.  Samuel Morse.   Samuel Morse is the father of communication and his invention laid the foundation for today’s mobile phones and computers.

4.  Louis Pasteur.  Louis Pasteur, a French scientist, first demonstrated that infection results from the activities of microscopic organisms (germs and viruses).  He also introduced sterilization methods aimed at destroying these organisms before they infect us.

There are many other Christians whose activities I would have loved to highlight in this write up but I cannot because of time and space constraints.  I hope to write on them in future.

Having read this piece so far, I expect some questions to crop up naturally.  I will now take two of them to encourage us.

1.  Can we excel like the aforementioned Christians especially in this age and time? The answer is YES we can because ‘’…with God all things are possible’’ (Matthew 19:26).

2.  What conditions must we satisfy to excel like them? We must be willing to:

  • Be used by God.  Like Prophet Isaiah while addressing God, we must be willing to say: ‘’Here am I; send me’’ (Isaiah 6:8).
  • Ask God to give us first-rate ideas that will improve humanity and the wisdom to put them into action.  Guess what? He will oblige us (James 1:5).
  • Return all glory to God.  When success eventually comes our ways, we must be ready to return all glory to God (Psalm 29:1–2).

Friend, perhaps you are not cut out for inventing stuffs-don’t worry!  At least, you should be able to make somebody happy with your action(s) henceforth.  Send that money to those in need today; make somebody’s day through a telephone call, visit that lonely neighbour of yours, send a get well card to that sick person, appreciate your spouse etc.  Just do something nice and you can be sure that your efforts will not go unrewarded (Galatians 6:7) in Jesus name.  Amen.
