Jesus narrated a parable in Matthew 13:24-30! In it, He said a man planted good seed in his field, but at night, his enemy came over, and sowed weeds among his wheat. Soon, both sprouted side by side, and his workers became justifiably worried, and requested that the weeds be destroyed. But, the man told them to wait till the harvest time, when the weeds would be separated from the wheat, and the risk of collateral damage considerably reduced.
Above is a very popular parable, and I will like us to look closely at the word ‘Weeds’ in it, in this write up. Weeds are plants sown unintentionally, and grow where they are not wanted. They are very dogged, domineering, and destructive in nature, and reduce crop yield considerably. In addition, they place a huge financial strain on global economy year after year. But they have some good values, which include soil stabilization, habitat/food for wildlife, and nectar for bees as well.
Figuratively speaking, every unwanted situations or things that afflict a person, and make his or her life very hard/uninteresting, can be likened to weeds. They are usually implanted by the devil, our enemy, and like their natural counterparts, they are very dogged, domineering, and destructive too. But, if properly managed, they can make people stronger, wiser and more purposeful in the long run.
Figurative weeds are not strange to humanity! For instance, David met his, in a formidable Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1-58), while Joseph met his, in his jealous brothers, slavery, imprisonment, and betrayal from his ex-prison mate. Daniel met his ‘weed’ in the den of hungry lions (Daniel 6:1-28), while Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego met theirs in the burning fiery furnace (Daniel 1:1-3:30). And in this day and age, a lot of people experience different ‘weeds’ in their lives on a daily basis. Such ‘weeds’ include sudden/painful death of a loved one, unruly children, divorce, ill-health, addiction, low self-esteem, lack of support, business failure, poverty, and debt.
Nonetheless, I am glad to state here that you don’t have to reap the weeds in your life, since you did not sow them to start with. God will do that on your behalf at the appropriate time, if you allow Him! Is there any ‘weed’ troubling you at the moment? If there is, then please relax, because God is close by to remove it for you (Isaiah 35:4).
Friend, God is close by to save your children from the ‘weed’ wrecking their lives, and they will go on to fulfil their destiny in life (Isaiah 49:25). He is also close by to save you from the ‘weed’ ruining your marriage, so that you can have a rest of mind (Isaiah 26:3). The ‘weed’ in your health is in trouble from now on, because God is close by to heal you (Jeremiah 33:6). The ‘weed’ of joblessness that is determined to disgrace you is about to disappear, as God is close by to give you a new/better job (Psalm 84:11). Are you grieving presently? If you are then, be cheerful, for God through the Holy Spirit, will comfort you (John 14:16).
But, you have to play your part very well! You have to adopt a positive attitude towards God, and be prepared to praise Him, serve Him, and honour Him at all times. And very soon, the ‘weeds’ in your life will disappear, and you will be well placed to succeed in life, and assist humanity. And when you are through with this world, you will have a befitting resting place waiting for you in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 25:34-40), in Jesus name. Amen.
