I had an informal discussion with some folks, on the impact of the modern church on the global scene recently, and we came to the sad conclusion that we are not pulling our weight enough as we ought to. That means, we might not be carrying out the great commission (Mark 16:15) properly, and if we continue like this, we might incur the wrath of God before long (Matthew 7:19). To prevent this from happening therefore, we concluded that we must start doing things differently from now on. We must go back to the basics, and conduct our activities like the early church did and got superb results.
So what did the early Church do, you may wish to ask? Well, they conformed to certain protocols embedded in Acts 2:40-47. And we will be doing ourselves lots of good if we imbibe them; otherwise we are just wasting our time. For instance:
1. They laid emphasis on teaching and learning the word of God. Peter taught the early Christians the word of God devotedly: ‘’And with many other words he (i.e. Peter) testified and exhorted them…’’ (Acts 2:40). The result was that: ‘’those who gladly received his word were baptized; and… about three thousand souls were added to them’’ (Acts 2:41). Therefore, if we really have it in mind to populate the church, and increase its effectiveness again, then we must begin to lay emphasis on teaching and learning the word of God henceforth.
2. They continued in the Apostles doctrines and fellowship. They did this through breaking of bread, and in prayers (Acts 2:42). And the result was that: ‘’fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles’’ (Acts 2:43). Thus, if we seriously want the fear of God to pervade the church, and if we seriously want signs and wonders to be commonplace again, then we must embrace the Apostles doctrines and fellowship from now on.Please remember that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10)!
3. They were committed to sharing their possessions with one another. The early Christians sold their belongings, pooled the proceeds together, and shared them among all, as each one had need. The result was that, no one lacked among them (Acts 2:44-45, 4:34-35). Friend, if we truly desire to reduce desperation, harassment, and sin in the church, and if we truly desire to produce good citizens all around, then we have to meet people’s needs first. And we can do this more easily, by pooling our resources together.
4. They kept each other’s company. ‘’So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people…’’ (Acts 2:46-47a). The result of their action was that the Lord added to the church daily (Acts 2:47b).
Friend, as you can see, there are a number of things that we can do to shake the world for Jesus once again, and avoid the wrath of God. We must be committed to teaching and learning the word of God, and observing the Apostle’s doctrines and fellowship. We must share what we have with others. We must keep each other’s companyas well. If we do all these, I am confident that the church will soar again, and we shall receive great rewards from God at the end of the day (Galatians 6:7-8) in Jesus name. Amen.
Jesus is Lord!
