The Sun Will Shine Again

My Secondary School, Government College, Ibadan, Nigeria, lost an old boy recently. He was a lovely, jovial, friendly, and cerebral young man.  He will be buried shortly, and sorely missed by all and sundry!

A couple of people known to me, also lost their loved ones in recent times, and today I will like to identify with them in obedience to the instruction of Apostle Paul in Romans 12:15 i.e., “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep’’.

If you are one of those rejoicing at the moment, I join you to give thanks to God Almighty. May your joy not be cruelly truncated in Jesus name. Amen. But if you are mourning the loss of a loved one, please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Certainly this period cannot be fun for you, and you must be very low in the spirit right now. Have you questioned God, and made up your mind to part ways with Him, for ‘letting you down? If you have, I humbly ask you to hold your peace, and pay attention to me at this moment! Please bear it in mind that although grief is the price we have to pay for love, we must never allow it to extinguish our trust in God.

Friend, please permit me to encourage you with the following bible passages at this point in time.

1. “To everything there is a season…A time to be born, And a time to die…A time to mourn, And a time to dance’’ (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4).

The wise King Solomon said all above at a point in his life, and it will help you a great deal if you accept the reality that, life death and grief are key components of living, which we cannot wish away.

2. “Man’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed’’ (Job 14:5).

God determined the life span of your beloved just like every other person’s, and there is nothing anyone could have done to alter it. His or her journey has ended, and the time to rest has come; this should be your joy!

3. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of the saints’’ (Psalm 116:15).

If God is celebrating the home coming of your beloved right now, then you shouldn’t mourn endlessly. Remember that at the appropriate time, he or she will rise up again, and be united with you in Christ (1Thessalonians 4:16-17). This should be your joy as well!

Friend, I urge you to wipe away your tears as quickly as possible, brace yourself up, and move on with your life gracefully. Please, I am not in any way suggesting that complying with my advice will be easy, but I am persuaded that it is possible (Matthew 19:26).

And perhaps you haven’t given your life to Jesus Christ i.e., you are not born-again yet, then you need to sort this out unfailing right now so as to finish well in life, and attain heaven when your race on earth has effectively ended (John 3:3). May your Sun shine once more, and may your joy be fully re-ignited before long, in Jesus name. Amen.

Kick Leprosy Out!

Naaman (2 Kings 5:1-14) was the commander of the Army of Syria.  He was a man of valour, and his prowess in battle was awesome, but he was suffering from leprosy, a terrible medical condition for which he sought help from the best physicians in his time, all to no avail.  No doubt, he needed divine intervention, which ultimately came via Prophet Elisha at the prompting of an Israelite aid of his wife. And from that day on, his destiny changed; and he became clean, free, and happy once more.

Leprosy is a contagious, life altering, career terminating, and stigmatizing chronic disease.  It abnormally lightens the skin of those it affects, and destroys their fingers, toes, noses and nerves etc. as well.  On the whole, it disfigures and disables them.

Those that suffer from leprosy are called lepers.  They are usually snubbed by the members of the larger society, who regularly calls them all kinds of unprintable and derogatory names.  And due to the way the society treats them, they usually live all by themselves in isolated colonies far away from all and sundry.  And they find it extremely hard to engage in meaningful economic activities because of the limitations imposed on them by their condition.  That’s why they are predominantly very poor, and depend on the benevolence of people for their survival.  To cut a long story short, theirs is typically a difficult, isolated, poor, shameful, and sad existence.

Figuratively speaking, ‘leprous situations’ do occur in people’s lives too.  And most of them are caused by sins, and they usually result in intense hardship, societal isolation, shame, and sorrow.  Examples of leprous situations include, one’s past dark past, membership of evil society, and hideous personal and family history.  Negative effects of curses and covenants, barrenness of all kinds, poverty, strange/stubborn ailments, etc. are also regularly implicated.  If any of these is affecting you at the moment, then you need divine assistance, which I am happy to say are freely available through Jesus Christ.

Friend, perhaps your current ‘leprous situation’ was caused by your past sins; please don’t beat yourself to death anymore, because God is willing to discuss them with you, and save you from them.  In Isaiah 1:18 He said: ‘’Come now and let us reason together, Though your sins are like scarlet. They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool’’.

Jesus is also willing to set you free from your situation, and He made this very clear in Matthew 11:28 as follows:  Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest..  Friend, commit our situation into God’s able hands through Jesus Christ today; He will accept you as you are (John 6:37), and set you free (John 8:36).  Please do not miss this unique opportunity; ‘Kick Leprosy Out’ of your life once and for all and your life shall never be the same in Jesus name.  Amen.

Walk Before God Blameless

In Genesis 17:1 God said: ‘’—-I am the Almighty God, walk before me and be blameless’’.

This instruction was given to Abram and by extension to us, children of God for our own good but somehow, it appears to me as if many of us are finding it rather hard to comply with it.  This probably, may be because we are yet to fully grapple with who He is and what He can accomplish in our lives.  It is because of this, that I want to shed more light on His great might today.  But first of all, let us first look at the words MIGHTY and ALMIGHTY more closely.

A person is said to be MIGHTY if he or she is strong or very outstanding in a particular field of human endeavour and the world is/was full of such people.  Good examples include Nelson Mandela in the field of Human Rights and Human Dignity, William Shakespeare in Literature, Isaac Newton in Physics, Michael Faraday in Chemistry, Pythagoras in Mathematics, Ronald Ross in Medicine, Lord Denning in Law, Adam Smith in Economics, Mohammed Ali in Sports etc.  No doubt they are/were mighty men in their own rights.  However, one thing is common to them; each of them is/was mighty in one field only.  That means they are/ were limited.

But God is not limited because He is MIGHTY in ALL fields put together hence His designation; ALMIGHTY.  For example, He is mighty in Medicine.  Remember that He performed the first surgical operation in history (Genesis 2:21) and He is capable of healing all kinds of diseases (Exodus 15:26).  He is also mighty in Law (He gave the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:6-22) which form the basis of all earthly laws).  He is equally mighty in Engineering (He created this intricate universe of ours (Genesis 1:1), Agriculture (He owns all the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10), Military (He is mighty in battle (Psalm 24:8) etc.  You can see clearly that God is mighty in all fields; a feat that no one living or dead can boast of.  He is truly MIGHTY!

This same God is telling you to walk before Him blameless.  Listen, if you obey His instructions, you will do well in life (Deuteronomy 5:29).  Thank goodness that the bible is full of His instructions but it is your responsibility to pinpoint them.  For example, in Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus Christ instructed us to love God and our neighbours passionately.  If you love your neighbours for instance, you will not steal from them; you will not covet their spouses; you will not harm or kill them etc.  And if you love God along side then, you will surely walk before Him blameless.

However, let me reiterate here that compliance with His instructions cannot be easy since we are just mortals full of sins.  That is why we need Jesus Christ to assist us.  Have you accepted Him into your life as your personal Lord and Saviour; that is, are you born again? If you aren’t, please do so without delay.  It is after scaling over this harmless but very important hurdle that you can aspire to walk before God blameless (Philippians 4:13) and blessed.  Please remember that ‘’If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land’’ (Isaiah 1:19).  May your obedience be fully rewarded by God and may your joy be full all the days of your life in Jesus name.  Amen.

Pain to Power

We shall consider Genesis 28:10-19 in this write up.  It gives a good account of Jacob’s journey from Beersheba to Haran and from it; a couple of points can be deduced.  They are found in:

1. Verse 10.   Jacob left Beersheba for Haran.  Beersheba means a well of oath; a place of covenant.  Even though this sounds very promising he opted for more.  He proceeded to Haran which means mountaineers, a land of climbers or high flyers and on the way he encountered God, got his promises and became a high flyer too.  From this, we can deduce that better conditions await us out there if we mingle with high flyers.  Therefore, we should never limit ourselves.

2.  Verse 11.  When it was sunset, he settled down and stayed all night in a particular place.  Sunset depicts the final declining phase of something or the darkest moment in a person’s life.  This is the period when most people are prone to giving up.  If you are in this position at present, please don’t give up!

In this place too, Jacob converted a stone into pillow to support his head before sleeping off.  Figuratively speaking, stones connote pain or hardship which normally goes hand in hand with worries.  Jacob carried his worries with him till he slept.  It is obvious from above that worries weaken the body and it may kill if care is not taken.  Therefore, stop worrying because Jesus is ready to set you free (John 14:1).  Please give Him a chance!

3. Verse 12.  Jacob dreamed.  You too should dream so that you can hook up with God’s vision for your life.  How do you see yourself today and in years to come? Successful? That is what you will become in Jesus name.

In his dream, he saw a ladder linking the earth to the heavens.  A ladder is a tool for elevation or as it was in this account, a divine connection between men and God.  Today, reach out for God’s ladder, climb it (by way of prayer) and get connected to Him.

4. Verse 18.  Jacob converted the stones (his worries or pain) that he used as pillow into a pillar.  As we know, pillars provide support for superstructures.  That means there is power in pillars.  It cannot be out of place therefore if we say Jacob turned his Pain into Power.  This is what will happen to you when you get connected to God in Jesus name.  Amen.

Later, he poured oil on the pillar.  Oil connotes anointing, beauty, fatness, flourishing, riches etc.  This shows straightaway that when you get connected to God, not only will He convert your pain to power; He will also add to you, beauty, riches, flourishing, etc.

5. Verse 19.  Jacob changed the name of the place from Luz to Bethel.  When you get connected to God, your destiny will change; the way people see and relates with you will change because you will become a heavily improved person in Jesus name.  Amen.

Finally friend, let me encourage you to get connected to God today if you haven’t already. Fervently pray to Him concerning areas of your life that are giving you Pain and He will convert them to areas of Power.  He will also fill your mouth with laughter and your heart with joy in Jesus name.  Amen.  (Hebrews 11:6).

Pray For Your Friends!

We shall be looking at the benefits of praying for our friends in this write up and for the task; we shall take a look at Job 42:10.  It says:  ‘’And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends….’’

Job was a man who feared God and shunned evil.  And as a result, God had explicit confidence in him to the extent that He allowed Satan to rattle him because He was cock sure that he would never be disloyal to Him.  In the process, he (Job) lost everything he had except his life and some few friends whose comments about him were everything but kindly.  Even then, he still found it fitting to pray for them and God blessed him vastly in return.

The bible says we should pray for each other (James 5:16) because there are benefits attached to doing so.  For example, healing is one of them and in this case, it is not limited to restoration to good health alone.  It connotes restoration to perfection in all areas of life.  Job prayed for his friends and God restored his health back to perfection and gave him twice as much as he had earlier and blessed the latter part of his life more than the former.  As if these were not enough, He also gave him the opportunity to live up to a respectable old age and to die peacefully.  In short, God healed all aspects (physical, mental, marital, financial, material, etc) of his life (Job 42:10-17).

Friend, do you find time to pray for your friends? If you do, brilliant but if you don’t, you are just denying yourself of a lot of mouth watering benefits.  When you pray for them, other people will pray for you too because ‘’…whatever a man sows, that he will also reap’’ (Galatians 6:7).  Furthermore, Apostle Paul emphasised in 1Timothy 2:1-3 that praying for others, is both good and well acceptable to God.  And in a situation like this, I cannot see how you will not be blessed if you engage in it.

Perhaps you have been praying for improvements in certain areas of your life until now and it seems you are getting no where; perhaps you need to change your tactics a little bit.  Why don’t you consider praying for your friends and other people for a change? Job did and he was immensely blessed.  You too will be blessed if you do same in Jesus name.  Amen.

Finally, let me commit you into God’s able hands throughout this month and beyond and please endeavour to pray for your friends as much as you can. I will!

It Shall Come To Pass!

I once heard about a Pastor who was in charge of a small rural church. He loved giving people the chance to testify to the goodness of God in their lives whenever he ministered. He did so again one Sunday morning, but this time around, he encouraged each testifier to back up his or her testimony with an appropriate bible quotation.

The first person got up, and quoted Philippians 4:19: “and my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus’’. He then narrated how God supplied all his needs in a miraculous way during the week! After that, the second person got up, and quoted Galatians 6:9: “and let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart’’. He told the congregation how somebody he once helped, came back to give him a decent amount of money, which he used to settle his debts. Next, the third person got up, and cited Psalms 107:20 -“he sent his words and he healed them and delivered them from their destructions’’. She went on to give an account of how God delivered her from a long standing illness.

Several other people also gave their testimonies, and the church was truly blessed that day.

Finally, an old man got up and his quotation was very simple: “it shall come to pass’’. This is a very common biblical quotation! And his testimony was that he had many problems before, which he tried to solve by himself without success. He was ill, and had no money for proper medical treatment. Also, two of his children were really badly-behaved, and his wife’s business, their only source of income, had collapsed. Besides, he was neck deep in debt, and his creditors were after him 24/7.

At a point, he wanted to kill himself, but he was deterred by the hassles involved. In the end, he prayed to God to deliver him, and help came from unexpected quarters, and his problems were solved one after the other. That is, they all came to pass! He ended his testimony by challenging everyone in the congregation to take their concerns to God for resolution.

Friend, what is it that is making your life needlessly tough lately, and would not allow you to enjoy yourself? Is it an illness, poverty, joblessness, business failure, failed ministry, academic or professional inertia, childlessness, divorce, addiction, debt, etc.? Today, I challenge you like the old man did, to take it to God, and it shall come to pass sooner or later in Jesus name (Matthew 11:28). Amen.

Wait On The Lord!

This write up is intended to celebrate the begining of December 2004 and it is fitting to give thanks to God for protecting us to date.  To Him be all glory, honor and adoration in Jesus name.  Amen.

Friend, I know you must have gone through a lot since the beginning of the year; well done!  I hope you are not too tired but if you are then, you should buckle up very quickly and reposition yourself for good things that await you in 2005.  But you have to prepare yourself very well first and doing so is a serious affair.  What then are you expected to do you may wish to ask? Please refer to Isaiah 40:31 for guidance.  It says:

‘’But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint’’.

From the passage, you will discover that you are expected to wait on the Lord and doing this is quite beneficial.  The next question you may wish to ask is what does waiting on the Lord entail? Simply put, it entails doggedly asking God for your heartfelt needs until He releases them to you.  This does not usually happen automatically; sometimes you may have to wait for a while before God answers you.  Nevertheless, fasting and prayer is known to shorten the period of waiting (Mathew 17:20-21).

Now, let us look at the benefits of waiting on the Lord.  They are many but for now, we shall focus on those embedded in the parts of our main text that I underlined.

1.  Renew their strength.  When you wait on the Lord, you will renew your strength and you’ll be able to do things that you wouldn’t have ever imagined under normal circumstances and you will do them well.  And more importantly, no force on earth will be able to stop you (Isaiah 41:10-13).

2.  Mount up with wings like eagles.  Eagles are known to soar and when you wait on the Lord, you will mount up with wings like them and soar; that is, you will prosper.  2Chronicles 26:5 confirms this fact as follows: ‘’He sought (waited on) God … and as long as he sought (waited on) the LORD, God made him prosper’’.  Therefore, if you genuinely wait on the Lord, you will prosper in Jesus name.  Amen.

3.  Run and not be weary.  Be prepared to run swiftly, progress wise, when you wait on the Lord and guess what? You will not be weary because He will strengthen you continually.  The Psalmist attested to this in Psalm 29:11 when he said: ‘’The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people …’’.

4.  Walk and not faint.  Sometimes you may have to slow down (walk) a little bit while waiting on the Lord.  This period is essential for the purpose of stock taking and fortifying your strength.   Definitely, it does not imply that you are weak (or feeling faint) and if you do not lose focus, God will still exalt you at the end of the day as He does to all the people that waits on Him.  The Psalmist talked in support of this position in Psalm 37:34 in this manner:  ‘’Wait on the Lord, And keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land’’.

Friend, I encourage you to wait on the Lord as we transit into 2 year 005 so that you can have glorious moments throughout.  Please let it not be said of you that you failed because you failed to prepare.  It shall be well with you in Jesus name.  Amen.
